Profile
His first encounter to the photography was when he was in high school. One of his classmate invited him to the photography club in the school. Though he had no interest in the photography but just for the sake of curiosity, he joined in. The classmate taught him the basics and darkroom technique. He took some pictures with borrowed Pentax SLR for 2~3 month, but that was it. He had more interest in the musics and paintings and wanted to be a pianist or a painter. His mother played the organ in church school and he was a member of the chorus club in the high school. He picked up his first camera, a Olympus half size P&S camera when he was around 20 years old, started to take some snap shots as hobby at the time when was taking art classes for painting. It was the period when Japanese economy was booming. There were so much activities in the commercial & fashion/editorial photography. Talented young photographers were emerging and they were creating interesting and exiting images. And they were given so much freedom in creativity so they can express their ideas and feelings freely as almost as an art work. That was when he took serious interest in the photography, though not as a fine art. So, he enrolled in the photography school and studied in the advertising / fashion classes. After he finished the school, he worked in the commercial rental studio as an assistant for 1 year where he learned real world professional photography, made the connections to the design studios and the art directors in the advertising agencies and the magazines. He started to work as a freelance photographer for the major label recording companies to shoot popular pop groups and the star musicians for the jacket covers and the posters. It was a big break for a young novice. From there he moved on working with major advertising agencies, magazines in Japan, US and abroad. In 1991, he was back to the art school, Persons in New York, and started to work more on the fine art projects and exhibited some of the works in the galleries in Soho and East Village. |
